Overview
If you are looking to become a data scientist but don't know where to start, may I suggest taking Tomi Mester's "How to Become a Data Scientist" course. It won't take too much of your time, but it will give an idea of what you can expect when breaking into the exciting field of data science. I went through the course and felt it is quite useful to people looking to break into data science.

It's difficult to know where to get your start in data science. The field is growing rapidly and it's hard for anyone, let alone newcomers, to keep on top of all the changes. Although data science has been around for a while, it's growing due to more companies having access to a larger pool of data. This growth has generated blockbuster interest in finding people who can make sense out of the data.
Because the role of the data science is transforming constantly, it is difficult to know where to place your concentration. In short, here are questions many are asking:
These questions, and more are answered in this course. If you are interested in pursuing a career in data science, then I would urge you to sign up for the course and go through it in its entirety. It should take you about an hour of your time.
Who Is the Instructor?
Tomi Mester is a practicing data scientist. He worked in a corporate environment for a few years until he decided to set out on his own as a freelancer. If you are wondering if he is qualified to present a course on data science, I can safely state that he is. It's clear he has the expertise to teach this course.
Why Is the Course Free?
It's natural to ask why people offer free courses. You always want to know if there are any catches. The answer in Tomi's case is sort of. This is a stepping stone class to entice you into his six-week Junior Data Science First Month capstone class. However, you'll get enough great information from the free class about How to Become a Data Scientist, that you shouldn't let this deter you from taking the course.
Take the course!
I cannot make any claims to how the six week course is. At the time of this writing, the course is not available. You can be placed on a waiting list if you feel it is something you want to pursue. From the website, Tomi states that the next session may open up in January of 2019.
Note: I am not writing this review to sell Tomi's class. I do not get anything for this review. I feel the information contained in the free courses is useful for people who are trying to figure out how they should structure their data science career.
Recommendation
As you can probably tell, I am recommending you take the free class to learn where to focus your efforts when learning about data science. It is well produced, informative, and it's hard to imagine that you won't get anything out of it. Give it a try. It's free and you will learn something from the experience.
